Objective:
-
Clinical Condition of hypothyroidism with case study & Clinical Experience.
Hypothyroidism is a
condition characterized by abnormally low
Thyroid Hormone production. There are many disorders that result in Hypothyroidism.
These disorders may directly or indirectly involve
the Thyroid Gland. Because Thyroid Hormone affects Growth, development
& many Cellular Processes, Inadequate Thyroid Hormone has Wide spread
consequences for the body.
Thyroid
Hormones are produced by the Thyroid Gland. This Gland is located in the lower
part of the Neck. The Thyroid Gland uses iodine to produce Thyroid Hormones.
The two most important Thyroid Hormones
are Thyroxine (T4) & Tri-iodothyronine (T3), which account for 99% &
1% of Thyroid Hormones present in the Blood respectively. However, the Hormone
with the most biological activity is T3. Once released from the thyroid gland
into the blood, a large amount of T4 is converted into T3 - active hormone that
affects the metabolism of cells.
Decreased level of thyroid hormones shows
the symptoms like Fatigue, weakness, weight gain or increased difficulty losing
Weight, coarse, Dry Hairs, Dry Rough, Pale skin, Hair Loss, Cold Intolerance
Muscle Cramps & Frequent Muscle ache, Constipation, Depression,
Irritability Memory Loss, abnormal Menstrual cycle, Decreased libido.
Diagnosis:-
Blood test - Thyroid profile (hormone level) these may include:- T3, T4 & TSH (Thyroid - Stimulating
Hormone). Lower than Normal T4 levels
usually mean you have Hypothyroidism. However, some people may have increased
TSH levels while having normal T4 levels. This is called subclinical (mild)
hypothyroidism. It is believed to be an early stage of hypothyroidism.
If we observe
test results or physical exam of the thyroid are abnormal, we can go for thyroid ultrasound or Thyroid Scan to
check for Nodules or Inflammation.
